Chapter 9

The next morning, many things still confused Tom, the foremost of which at the moment was clothing. The only articles he had were the uncomfortable canvas cloth robes they’d given him, and he didn’t much feel like wearing them again. He resigned himself to wearing them and was about to leave to visit Nathan or explore if he could not, when someone knocked at the door.

The only person it could possibly be would be Dimitri, and Tom still didn’t know quite how to deal with the man. When he opened the door, however, a young girl who couldn’t be more than thirteen greeted him.

“You’re the new resident here, right?” She asked brightly. Tom had no idea how she would know he even lived here, and stared down at her in confusion

“Yes.”

“I can see that. The governor said that’s all you’d have, and that you needed clothing made. If you come with me, my master will take a look at you and we can give you something to hold you over until your clothes are done.” She seemed quite happy about the whole idea, and jogged down the pathway, looking over her shoulder to shoot him a “aren’t you coming?” look.

Tom followed slightly behind the girl. “Who is your master?”

“Hm? Oh, the master seamstress. I’m an apprentice.” She looked him over once as they walked. “Where did you get that, anyway? Aren’t you cold? It’s not yours, is it? It looks like army mage wear. You’re not a mage, are you? Air or Earth? Air mages wear white, right?” Tom decided to just let her talk until she settled on a question she actually wanted answered.

Thankfully, it didn’t take long until they arrived in a clearing that was very similar to the one Tom had visited for a short time on Ruthen’s island. There did not seem to be many residences here, and Tom saw fishermen selling their wares, stores that sold types of fruit and land food, and many people walking from building to building. Three young boys ran by with sticks, chasing some small squeaking animal, and one older man snapped at them as they ran past.

The girl led Tom to a building near the center of the market, decorated with woven shawls that hung on a fence outside. “This is where I work,” she stated proudly. “I’m the only apprentice right now.”

Tom followed her inside. A wooden wheeled contraption lay in the corner, spools of cloth and thread lay everywhere, and there seemed to be more doors than could fit rooms judging from the size of the building from the outside.

“I found him!” the girl called, and Tom looked down at her, confused.

“Good. Now, you go repair those boots like I told you, girl.” The youth smiled and vanished into one of the doors, and Tom turned to see a much older woman approaching him. She was dressed in a manner Tom could only call ridiculous, and she frowned at him, her face full of wrinkles. Somehow, she managed this with a sewing needle held in her mouth.
